Product details

During high intensity exercise, lactic acid is formed in the muscles and splits into lactate and hydrogen ions (H+). These H+ ions cause the blood and muscle to become more acidic (a drop in pH) which ihas a negative effect on performance. when the muscle pH drops from  7.0 to 6.5 (or lower), the muscle losses contractility and strength thus making it impossible to continue to exercise at the same intensity. Therefore, to cope with this acidity the body uses buffers. Carnosine is a muscular buffer .

Carnosine it made up of histidine and beta-alanine . We have plenty of histidine in our body, but not of beta-alanine . Therefore the amount of beta-alanine influences how much carnosine is made. Therefore, beta-alanine supplementation may help to increase the amount of muscle carnosine, a buffer of acidity in high-intensity exercise. Studies have shown that beta-alanine supplementation can increase muscle carnosine levels. Carnosine is present in high concentrations in muscle tissue and acts as a pH buffer.

The addition of Zinc in Beta-alanine Slow Release contributes to a normal acid-base metabolism.

Who can benefit from using Beta-Alanine?

It has been scientifically demonstrated that beta-alanine supplementation is most suitable for high-intensity exercise lasting at least several minutes, both for recreational and well-trained athletes.

Firstly, beta-alanine is recommended for those who perform sustained high intensity exercise lasting 1-7 minutes, such as 800m-3000m running. Similarly, it may improve performance in high intensity interval training which can be incorporated into training programmes for all types of athletes. In line with this, it could be useful for delaying fatigue in team sports such as football which require repeated bouts of high intensity sprints . Finally, endurance athletes can benefit from taking beta-alanine in situations such as a sprint finish or hill climb.

Nutritional information

Usage

Beta-alanine should be taken chronically, for a minimum of 4 weeks. The total amount of beta-alanine taken is the main determinant of how much muscle carnosine rises. Therefore, there are several possible protocols for optimal dosing.

High dose - short duration
6.4g (4x2 tablets/day), 4 weeks

Low dose - long duration
3.2g (2x2 tablets/day), 8 weeks

Maintenance dose
0.8g (1 tablet/day), max. 4 weeks

It is recommended to:
-Take Beta-alanine in combination with a carbohydrate-rich snack, for optimal carnosine loading.
-Take Beta-alanine during heavy training periods, for optimal carnosine loading.
-Spread Beta-alanine intake during the day (2h between intakes) to reduce the risk of unpleasant tingling sensations.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to experience a tingling sensation after using beta-alanine?

Yes, that is possible. This phenomenon is called paraesthesia and usually manifests itself as a temporary tingling or prickling sensation, often on the skin. Although this can sometimes be experienced as unpleasant, it is completely harmless.

Etixx Beta Alanine uses a slow release formula. This means that the beta alanine is gradually released into the body, which significantly reduces the chance of paraesthesia compared to classic beta alanine supplements. Nevertheless, it cannot be completely ruled out that some individuals are more sensitive to this and may still experience a mild tingling sensation.

To minimise this as much as possible, we recommend taking the tablets spread throughout the day and preferably during a meal. Especially when you are sensitive to paraesthesia, this can help to reduce the discomfort.

What can I do to prevent or delay muscle acidification?

During high-intensity exercise, the body produces lactic acid, which is then broken down into lactate and acidic hydrogen ions (H+). An accumulation of these H+ ions causes the acidity level (pH) in the muscles to drop. When this happens, muscle function decreases and you may experience typical acidosis symptoms, such as a burning sensation, muscle stiffness, reduced strength and faster fatigue. The more intense the effort, the faster this process occurs.

Fortunately, the body has natural buffer systems that help counteract this acidification. An important muscle buffer is carnosine, a substance that helps to absorb excess H+ ions and thereby slow down the drop in pH levels in the muscles. Carnosine is built up from beta-alanine and histidine. Since histidine is generally present in sufficient quantities in the body, beta-alanine is the limiting factor. By taking additional beta-alanine through Etixx Beta Alanine Slow Release, the carnosine stores in the muscles can be increased. This improves the buffering capacity of the muscles, allowing acidification to be delayed and enabling you to sustain intensive efforts for longer. Since beta-alanine works through gradual build-up in the body, daily and prolonged intake is necessary to experience its effects.

For optimal results, we recommend:

  • 4-week course: 4 x 2 tablets per day, or
  • 8-week course: 2 x 2 tablets per day

Ideally, start 4 to 8 weeks before an important competition or intensive training period. In addition to targeted supplementation, a well-structured training programme, sufficient recovery and appropriate nutrition remain essential to delay muscle acidification for as long as possible.

Which Etixx products may be useful if you often suffer from muscle cramps?

To prevent muscle cramps, maintaining a good fluid balance is extremely important.

Etixx Isotonic:

  • Ideal sports drink during exercise for all athletes from any sport.
  • Source of carbohydrates, additional minerals and fluids.
  • Recommendation: minimum 500ml per hour of exercise.

Magnesium 2000 AA / Magnesium Instant Stick / Magnesium 100% Bisglycinate PRO LINE:

  • Magnesium is an important mineral that plays a role in more than 300 reactions in our body.
  • Magnesium is important for electrolyte balance. An imbalance or deficiency could possibly lead to cramps.
  • Recommendation: course of at least 4 weeks. A course may be repeated several times per year.

Sport Hydro Tab (in very warm weather):

  • Sport Hydro Tab is a low calorie effervescent tablet with a high concentration of the important minerals lost through sweat. Please note, this tablet contains no carbohydrates and is therefore not suitable for replenishing energy.
  • Ideal product for athletes who sweat a lot or the so called "salty sweaters".
  • Recommendation: ½ to 1 tablet in 500ml of water.

Beta Alanine Slow Release:

  • Chronic, daily use can lead to delaying muscle acidification.
  • Recommendation: start supplementation 4 to 8 weeks before peak moment.
