Protein is an essential nutrient needed in the everyday diet and can be found in food such as meat, fish, eggs, milk and nuts. It plays a role in the maintenance of muscle mass as well as contributing to the growth of muscle mass. Athletes in particular have an increased need for dietary protein and the recommended protein intake for athletes is 1.2-1.7 g per kg of body weight per day.
