Product details

During exercise, your body sweats to help regulate body temperature. This loss of fluid can be extremely detrimental to performance and therefore athletes must compensate by drinking to replace lost fluids. Not only that, but when we sweat we lose key electrolytes such as potassium and magnesium which are essential for performance. They must also be replaced to encourage moisture retention and stimulate thirst.

In addition to this, performance in prolonged exercise is reliant on the availability of muscle glycogen and therefore it can be important to take on carbohydrates during exercise to replenish fuel stores. If no carbohydrates were consumed during prolonged or intense efforts, muscle glycogen stores would be depleted after approx. 90min.

The amount of carbohydrates you should take during exercise depends on the length of the session or event.

  • Exercises < 1h: not necessary to consume carbohydrates during exercise.
  • Exercises 1-2h: 30-60g carbohydrates per hour exercise.
  • Exercises 2-3h: 60-90g carbohydrates per hour exercise.
  • Exercises >3h: 90-120g carbohydrates per hour exercise.

PRO LINE High Carb Drink is an energy drink specially developed for optimal absorption of a large amount of carbohydrates during prolonged efforts. This unique drink contains 70g of carbohydrates per serving, in an ideal 1:0.8 (glucose:fructose) ratio, 400mg sodium, and is supplemented with vitamin B3. Vitamin B3 contributes to a normal energy-yielding metabolism and reduces fatigue and tiredness.

Who will benefit from drinking the PRO LINE High Carb Drink?

As this carbohydrate-rich sports drink with electrolytes contains no less than 70 g carbohydrates and 400 mg sodium per 500 ml, it is ideal for (ultra) endurance athletes performing efforts of 3 hours or longer, aiming for carbohydrate intakes >90 g per hour.

Why a 1:0.8 carb ratio?

Ultra-endurance athletes and well-trained endurance athletes often consume larger amounts of carbohydrates during efforts lasting longer than 3 hours, sometimes up to 120g per hour . During intense exercise, the body can absorb a maximum of approximately 60g of glucose per hour from the intestines due to saturation of the glucose transporter. For prolonged efforts exceeding three hours, this can become a limiting factor, as the carbohydrate requirement is higher than 60g per hour. By consuming different types of carbohydrates, such as glucose and fructose, simultaneously, total carbohydrate absorption can increase to 90g per hour or more, since these sugars are absorbed through two different intestinal transporters.

Studies show that at intakes exceeding 90g of carbohydrates per hour, ratios closer to an equal amount of glucose and fructose, such as 1:0.8 , may be even more effective and are therefore preferred. This is partly because a greater proportion of the ingested carbohydrates can be effectively used as energy without exceeding the capacity of the glucose transporter. Additionally, this ratio slightly reduces the risk of gastrointestinal issues when consuming such high amounts of carbohydrates.

The PRO LINE High Carb Drink, with a 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio, optimally utilizes different absorption pathways. This makes it ideal for endurance athletes who perform at high intensity for extended periods and aim for a maximum carbohydrate intake of up to 120g per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Why do some products carry the additional name ‘PRO LINE’?

Products with the additional label 'PRO LINE' contain higher doses of active ingredients compared to the basic products within the Etixx range. These products have been developed for athletes with a higher training load, more intensive performances and specific goals, where more targeted support is required.

For the average recreational athlete, these higher doses are in theory often not necessary. The basic products within the Etixx range generally provide sufficient support to optimally support performance, recovery and general sports goals.

For competitive, ambitious or professional athletes however, the PRO LINE products can offer just that extra advantage to optimise performance, further support recovery or work even more specifically towards specific sports goals.

Are all products tested for prohibited substances and guaranteed doping-free?

ABSOLUTELY! At Etixx we do everything we can to guarantee the quality, safety and purity of our products. That is why all Etixx products carry the internationally recognised quality label Informed Sport.

Informed Sport is one of Europe's most leading certification programmes in the field of doping free sports nutrition and applies the strictest quality standards within the industry. This quality label guarantees that every production batch of our complete assortment is tested by an independent accredited laboratory. This ensures that our products are free from prohibited substances and can be safely used by both professional and recreational athletes.

What makes Informed Sport extra reliable is that the controls do not stop after the initial certification. Through regular, unannounced blind tests, already certified products are also continuously retested. This strict testing process is based on more than 55 years of expertise in anti doping research and is continuously further refined, with more than 22,000 sample analyses per year.

Furthermore, Informed Sport stands for maximum transparency. By entering the batch number of your product, which can be found on the packaging, on the website of Informed Sport, you can consult the test report digitally at any time.

When you choose Etixx, you choose sports nutrition you can rely on with confidence, with the assurance that our products have been carefully checked and meet the highest standards in terms of purity and safety.

When should I use products with a 1:0.8 glucose-to-fructose ratio?

Ultra endurance athletes and well trained endurance athletes more frequently consume larger amounts of carbohydrates during exercise lasting longer than 3 hours, up to as much as 120g per hour. During intensive exercise, the body absorbs a maximum of approximately 60g of glucose per hour from the intestine due to saturation of the glucose transporter. During prolonged exercise of more than three hours, this can be a limiting factor because the need for carbohydrates is higher than 60g per hour. By simultaneously consuming different types of carbohydrates such as glucose and fructose, the total absorption of carbohydrates can increase to 90g per hour or more, since absorption occurs through two different absorption channels in the intestine.

Studies show that at intakes of more than 90g of carbohydrates per hour, ratios closer to an equal amount of glucose and fructose, such as 1:0.8, may be even better and are therefore preferred. This is partly because a larger proportion of the consumed carbohydrates can actually be utilised as energy, without exceeding the capacity of the glucose transporter. Furthermore, the risk of gastrointestinal problems is slightly lower with this ratio at such high carbohydrate intakes.

What is the difference between an isotonic sports drink and a hypertonic sports drink?

The difference between an isotonic and a hypertonic sports drink lies primarily in the concentration of dissolved particles, such as carbohydrates and electrolytes. This concentration determines how quickly the drink is absorbed by the body and for which purpose it is most suitable.

Isotonic sports drink

An isotonic sports drink has approximately the same concentration of dissolved particles as blood. This allows the drink to leave the stomach quickly and be absorbed efficiently by the body. This makes isotonic sports drinks ideal during exercise where both fluid and energy need to be replenished. The main benefits of an isotonic sports drink are:

  • Fast fluid absorption
  • Replenishment of electrolytes
  • Supply of energy in the form of carbohydrates
  • Support of performance during prolonged exercise

An example of this is Etixx Isotonic Drink or Isotonic Drink Tabs.

Hypertonic sports drink

A hypertonic sports drink contains a higher concentration of dissolved particles than blood and therefore has a higher osmolality. Because these drinks are processed more slowly by the stomach, fluid and energy are absorbed less quickly than with isotonic drinks. The primary purpose of a hypertonic sports drink is therefore not hydration, but the maximum replenishment of energy stores. Hypertonic sports drinks are most suitable:

  • During very prolonged exercise with a high energy demand
  • When additional carbohydrate supply is the main priority
  • In situations where fluid intake is less of a priority

An example of this is Etixx PRO LINE High Carb Drink.
