The availability of carbohydrates is a key determinant of performance during prolonged endurance exercise and high-intensity intermittent exercise (alternating periods of effort and short recovery). It is therefore important to replenish carbohydrates during these activities, as they help maintain blood glucose levels during exercise and replenish muscle glycogen stores.
These energy bars are suitable both before and during exercise. Before exercise, athletes should maximize their carbohydrate stores. This is achieved by consuming a carbohydrate-rich diet in the days leading up to a competition or demanding training session (carbohydrate loading) and by eating a carbohydrate-rich meal 1.5 to 4 hours before the event or workout. The energy bars can be eaten as a snack in the days before competition and during or shortly after the pre-event meal.
During exercise lasting 1–2 hours and 2–3 hours, it is recommended to consume 30–60 g and 60–90 g of carbohydrates per hour, respectively, which corresponds to 1 to 2 energy bars. Without carbohydrate intake during prolonged exercise, muscle glycogen stores are typically depleted after approximately 90 minutes.

Why a 1:0.8 carbohydrate ratio?
Ultra-endurance athletes and well-trained endurance athletes often consume large amounts of carbohydrates during exercise lasting longer than 3 hours, sometimes up to 120 g per hour.
During intense exercise, the body can absorb approximately 60 g of glucose per hour from the intestine because the glucose transporter becomes saturated. During prolonged exercise, this can become a limiting factor, as carbohydrate requirements exceed 60 g per hour.
By consuming different carbohydrate types, such as glucose and fructose, simultaneously, total carbohydrate absorption can increase to 90 g per hour or more, because they are absorbed through different intestinal transport pathways.
Studies show that at intakes exceeding 90 g of carbohydrates per hour, ratios closer to an equal amount of glucose and fructose, such as 1:0.8, may be even more effective and are therefore preferred. This is partly because a greater proportion of the ingested carbohydrates can be used as energy without exceeding the capacity of the glucose transporter.
