Mieke Waterschoot

Urologist & Endurance Athlete Sport has been an integral part of my life from an early age. Beginning with swimming and volleyball in my youth, I continued this passion through secondary school, focusing on sports sciences. Today, as a practicing urologist and surgeon, I find balance and rejuvenation through running and cycling after demanding days in the hospital. I am proud to serve as a team doctor for Alpecin–Deceuninck, where I merge my medical expertise with my enthusiasm for cycling. Personally, I’ve completed several granfondos, notably finishing as the fourth woman in the Cannibale. Over the past two years, I’ve embraced gravel biking, enjoying the freedom it offers in nature. Running remains a cornerstone of my routine. Since 2025, I’ve been a member of the ASICS FrontRunner team, embodying the philosophy “Sound Mind, Sound Body.” With three marathons completed and a personal best of 3:45, I’ve recently ventured into trail running and am preparing for my first trail race this summer. For me, sport is more than just physical activity—it’s therapy, passion, and a way of life.

Swimming

I am a ex professional swimmer. In December 2024, after competing in three Olympic Games and swimming for 30 years, I decided to step aside from competitive swimming. However, I am a natural athlete and have already started pursuing new challenges, such as playing tennis, completing my first half marathon, and participating in my first sprint triathlons.

Athletics (Heptathlon)

I started running at the age of 41, ran my first marathon at 43 and gradually evolved into an ultrarunner. I am the only Belgian woman to have finished the Spartathlon ultrarace (246 km) twice, holding the Belgian female's course record. My achievements also include becoming the female Belgian champion in the 100 km race and completing the grueling Marathon des Sables. In 2024, I set out to break the world record for consecutive marathons, running 366 marathons in 366 days in support of BIG against Breastcancer. Through extreme weather, injuries, and relentless challenges, I never gave up, fueled by Etixx sports nutrition and the determination and support of my husband Bruno, friends, and sponsors. With an unbreakable spirit and a heart for charity, I'm planning to continue to inspire other people on my journey of resilience and dedication.
